Written for the Nieuw Ensemble
"Scherzo e Trio" is a lively piece that explores polytonality. It begins bitonally, with the Cello and Bass in D against the melody in A, and from there develops into stranger keys, sometimes synthetic, sometimes whole-tone. The Trio is made artificially slower by the use of a hemiola rhythm in the Violin, Viola and Harp, but there should be no change in tempo, and the other instruments should retain the 3/4 feel. The Trio is also where the piece enters 3 keys simultaneously, being Ab, Db and A.
