Two Trench Poems
2018 rev. 2020 | 11’
baritone, piano
Text by Wilfred Owen and Isaac Rosenberg
Commissioned by Jeremy Huw Williams alongside winning the Paul Mealor Award for Young Composers 2018
Two Trench Poems sets the texts of two young poets who died fighting in the First World War 100 years ago. Both responding to the horrors of the war, they nonetheless take very different approaches. Owen tackles his imagery head-on, unapologetically showing the brutality of the trenches. Rosenberg, meanwhile, concentrates on a single peaceful moment, allowing the listener to infer the savagery that juxtaposes with the poem.
